My first medical-themed painting shows 2 people scrubbed in, operating on a sandcastle with a microscope. They are so serious in their focus to repair the sandcastle, oblivious to the beautiful beach around them, despite their appropriate foot attire.
In my early career as a nurse, I struggled to take adequate time off. This was partly due to the laughably small amount of PTO I was offered as a full time medical professional, on-call requirements, and the accepted wisdom of putting my nose “to the grindstone”.
But even when I was on vacation, I found it hard to relax. I chose a career that demands vigilance, difficult to turn on and off. Unlike the power switch of a microscope.
