How OR Nurses Play Cards, 2019, 2022
In May 2019, a politician from Washington State said something dumb about nurses, insinuating we’re lazy and play cards all day. She faced a ton of backlash, and apologized, but not before nurses took to the internet to show the world how hard we work.
Part of a circulating nurse’s job is helping a scrub or surgeon complete the turn of their gown. Ensuring sterility means playing a sort of invisible game, where folds of fabric, conceptual boundaries and a 1 inch border determine what’s sterile and what’s contaminated.
When we ‘dance’, they hand me a paper card attached to a string, I hold onto and contaminate the paper, while they spin and take the still-sterile string, tying their gown so they are wrapped in hot, blue polyester.
I keep these cards, perfect for writing notes on my patients, or taking a message from a doctor’s beeper. Most are branded with a company logo, and at the end of a busy day, I have an entire collection, or as I like to think of it: a winning hand.
