Dr. Bookwalter
When we look inside the body, what will we find? Tightly packed organs, tissues, adhesions? Swallowed batteries, sex toys, dermoid cysts?
Why not alphabet soup? Maybe the letters will float together to spell out a diagnosis, or a funny message, like an anatomical Magic 8 Ball.
In this painting, the belly is exposed by a well-known retractor set, the Bookwalter, which attaches to the frame of the operating table. It provides hands-free surgical assistance, and it’s been used in almost every American hospital for the last 30 years.
After finishing this piece I put it up for sale on Etsy, and was contacted a few months later by a relative of Dr. Bookwalter, who bought it as a gift for the famous surgeon. Having my painting wind up in the hands of the inventor of such an iconic instrument is a great honor. It’s an incredible compliment, and warms my heart to know that my experiences and art are valued by others in medicine.
I thank each and every one of you for the support and love.
Original SOLD as a gift to the inventor of the Bookwalter Retractor, Dr. Bookwalter.
